The objectives of this study were to: (1) describe the current status (species composition and structure) of forest communities in two areas of HOFU, (2) establish fenced and unfenced plots for monitoring changes in forest plant communities in areas where deer are excluded and in areas accessible to deer, and (3) describe the intensity of use by deer of woody stems in the forest communities. This report describes the present conditions of two forest stands at HOFU with emphasis on woody vegetation. The description of plant communities in fenced (deer excluded) and unfenced plots constitutes a reference or baseline for long-term monitoring of the effects of deer on forest regeneration
