The plant ecology of Mammoth Cave National Park

The purpose of this study was to classify, analyze, and map the principal plant associations which occur in Mammoth Cave National Park. The forests of Mammoth Cave National Park were analyzed using stand attributes of density, basal area and importance. These data were compared through the use of similarity scalers and ordinated in two dimensional space. The dominant forest species of Mammoth Cave National Park associate into seven forest types. The upland and slope oak-hickory stands occupy the largest ordination space with stands grouped as mesophytic occupying the second largest space. The stands dominated by eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) occupy the smallest ordination space. The forests of Mammoth Cave National Park are controlled by physiographic, edaphic and stand age factors which limit the distribution of the characteristic tree species found in each association, a trend reflected in the ordination of stands.
