In this report the author describes plant succession and soil development for a series of five stands on glacial outwash adjacent to the McKinley River in an alpine tundra region of the Alaska Range in Mount McKinley National Park. The ages of the four successional stands are estimated on the basis of shrub growth, ring counts, and correlation with historical advances of other glaciers. The vegetation of each stand is described and cover-abundance and frequency of plant species are given. The progressive changes that soil undergoes from the initial coarse gravel outwash through the four successional stands to the climax condition are described.
