Twenty seven mesic hanging garden habitats in Zion National Park and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area were surveyed for vascular plant, small mammal, and insect species distribution and abundance. Small mammals trapped in hanging gardens were similar in species composition and abundance to the surrounding xeric habitat community. Plant species assemblages were distinct in each microhabitat, but showed little seasonal change from June to August on two sites with replicate sampling periods. The main focus during the first year of a projected three-year study was the surveying of plant and invertebrate animal communities and the determination of levels of similarity among the sampled plant or insect communities.
