Population and Ecological Characteristics of White-Tailed Deer on Catoctin Mountain Park

A two-year study was conducted on the deer herd at Catoctin Mountain Park, MD in order to determine population and ecological characteristics to provide the basis for management decisions. Movements of deer were examined with radio telemetry; spotlight counts were done to estimate numbers, sex and age ratios, and fecundity; dead deer were analyzed for health estimates; and vegetation was evaluated for deer impacts. Eleven management alternatives are discussed.
