This report is an abbreviated version of more complete reports on the "Population dynamics and denning ecology of black bears in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia" (Carney 1986, M.S. Thesis) and "Seasonal movements and habitat use by black bears in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia" (Garner 1987, M.S. Thesis. Detailed descriptions of statistical analyses and references to supporting literature have been deleted. Copies of the Master's of Science theses are available from the Newman Library at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and at the Resource Management Office at Shenandoah National Park, Virginia. This research was conducted in the Central District of Shenandoah National Park during 1982-1985. It was a comprehensive study of black bear distribution and habitat use. The purpose of the research was to provide information that would be used in the development of a bear management plan for the park
