The primary interest in this study was to determine whether there were differences in ozone tolerance between populations of trees in high ambient ozone areas and low ambient ozone areas and whether this ozone tolerance is reducing growth of forest trees. Population samples were obtained from areas that differed in air quality for two species, red maple and quaking aspen. Four to 14 individuals from each of five populations of quaking aspen, Populus tremuloides Michx., and nine populations of red maple, Acer rubrum L., were sampled from 9 different national park areas (Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area, OH; Shenandoah National Park, VA; Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN; Mammoth Cave National Park, KY; Buffalo National River, AK; Saratoga National Historical Park, NY; Acadia National Park, ME; Isle Royale National Park, MI; and Voyageurs National Park, MN). In addition, 3-11 individuals from populations of black cherry, Prunus serotina Ehrh., in 6 national parks and populations of flowering dogwood, Cornus florida L., from four national parks were collected. Charts give the numbers of species propagated from each area along with average annual ozone concentrations; leaves showing visible injury for one-year-old and two-year-old clones; and visible injury to trees fumigated with ozone.
