Research on the population dynamics of the Mentasta Caribou Herd (MCH) began in spring 1987 and concluded in spring 1990. This report presents results of the 1989-90 work and summarizes results from all three years of research. To evaluate the status of the MCH, productivity, cow and calf mortality, seasonal range use, and range overlap and interaction with the adjacent Nelchina and Chisana caribou herds were studied. For all three years, there was an estimated decline in the MCH from approximately 2,900 in 1987 to 2,300 in 1990.
