Population Models for Common Terns in Massachusetts

There have been declining numbers of Common Terns (Sterna hirundo) breeding in Massachusetts over the last 30 years. In June 1975, the investigator in this study looked for breeding adult terns in three colonies (Bird Island, Yarmouth, and Monomoy), which were banded as chicks in earlier years, to determine if population declines have been because of recruitment failure of young birds into the breeding population. The results of this study suggested no large changes in recruitment or net immigration; thus population declines are attributed to increases in adult mortality.
