The author distributed questionnaires of the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission and the Florida Department of Natural Resources to determine the population status of the Florida black bear (Ursus americanus), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), and the Florida panther (Felis concolor) within the Everglades. Results include 145 black bears and 92 panthers primarily in Collier County, FL. Nocturnal and diurnal counts show that alligator population trends have been upward in recent years despite the loss of more than 1.5 million acres of habitat. Aerial deer counts yield a deer population estimate for the 4.5 million acre Everglades Region of 20,000 with a 1971-1972 legal deer harvest of 900 from the 800,000 acre Everglades Wildlife Management Area.
