This report covers the impacts to the trail and resulting management/planning issues. The Portage Trail in Katmai National Park refers to a 1.75 mile route located in the center of the park and leads from the North Arm of Naknek Lake to Lake Grosvenor. The route generally follows at N-S axis from the Fure's Cabin site in the Bay of Islands, skirts a 0.5 mi diameter pond, passes through a low saddle that divides the two lake systems, and then descends to the shore of Lake Grosvenor. Although commonly referred to as a trail, the route bisects low areas with very poor drainage, and consequently the route is very muddy and at times is submerged by water along 50% of the total length. As a result, hip boots are strongly recommended when hiking this route.
