Pre-Civil War cave surveys

George AI. Pre-Civil War cave surveys

Europeans had been surveying caves since the 17th and 18th centuries. Up until the late 18th century, none of the caves in America are known to have been surveyed. Not all of the early collected cave surveys are profiled in this review. Only those cave maps which seem to set a precedent are included, or, when a cave map acted as the impetus for further cave surveying.
