Predation by black bear on mature male elk

Barmore WJ and Stradley DD. 1971. Predation by black bear on mature male elk. Journal of Mammalogy. 52(1):199-202

A single adult black bear was observed killing two adult male elk on the same or successive days at the same spot. The observations were made by the authors on April 10 and 11, 1969, during an aerial survey of elk distribution on winter range in Yellowstone National Park. The kills occurred at 9,200 feet near the summit of Amethyst Mountain in the northeast quarter of the Park.
