Plots that had been disturbed by logging, farming, grazing, fire, and the chestnut blight were estimated for productivity and cover type as a means of developing an index score for predicting developments. Eight forest cover types were defined, and measurement was made of elevation, topography, age, organic and B soil horizons. Productivity was scored on volume increment of all trees. Landform and soil depth were the best predicting factors. Topographic features, soil moisture, and the history of disturbances were all significant.
