Plants will grow in nearly pure gypsum. The White Sands area of New Mexico is predominately composed of gypsum. Many plants flourish there. An experiment was done in which wheat and peas were planted in a controlled environment in soils from 5 different areas including the White Sands. The experiments show that nearly pure gypsum will nourish plants as well, or better than, ordinary soil.
