Examination of soil from four ephemeral standing water sites at White Sands National Monument, New Mexico, to determine aquatic life forms. The four sites were found to have more than twenty species (chiefly crustaceans, protozoans, and nematodes) and the researchers indicate that more are present. Blue-green algae Oscillatoria sp., Ostracods podocops (seed shrimp), and Anostraca branchinectidae (fairy shrimp), as well as menatodes (round worms) were identified in the seemingly sterile ephemeral sites. Includes a list of protozoa at Lake Lucero (12 subphylum), and at the inlet to Lake Lucero (9 subphylum).
