Water quality, air quality, terrestrial pollution, and noise levels were studied in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, MI. Lake areas, depths, and shoreline lengths are given for Miners, Little Chapel, Chapel, Beaver, Trappers, Kingston, Grand Sable, and Little Beaver Lakes. The analysis of the water quality of these lakes included on site measurements of dissolved oxygen, temperature, and depth using a Yellow Springs Instrument oxygen meter. Water samples from these lakes were analyzed for ammonia-nitrogen, organic-nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, phosphorus-soluble, total phosphorus, pH, specific conductance, total alkalinity, suspended solids, dissolved solids, hardness, chloride, sulfate, turbidity, calcium, magnesium, iron, aluminum, manganese, copper, lead, sodium, and arsenic. The following streams were analyzed for the chemical parameters listed above: Wagner Creek, Tannery Creek, Munising River (sic), Miners River, Mosquito River, Chapel Creek, Anna River, Spray Creek, Beaver Creek, Sevenmile Creek, Sullivan Creek, Hurricane River, and Grand Sable Creek. Rainwater was analyzed for some of the chemical parameters listed above. Phytoplankton and zooplankton were identified from water samples from the previously mentioned lakes as well as from 8 stations on Lake Superior. Bottom sediments were analyzed for percentages of organic material and solids from 7 of the stations on Lake Superior and the 8 inland lakes (Miners Lake, Chapel Lake, Little Chapel Lake, Legion Lake, Beaver Lake, Trappers Lake, Kingston Lake, and Grand Sable Lake). Checklist of fish species from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is presented for Chapel, Beaver, Little Beaver, Kingston, and Grand Sable Lakes. Benthic invertebrates were identified from 4 stations on Lake Superior. Maps illustrate the aquatic habitats and sampling locations.
