The influx and dispersal of tamarisk (Tamarfx pentandra) along the Green and Colorado River bottoms of Canyonlands National Park is rapidly replacing the willow. the primary food of beaver (Castor canadensis). A survey was carried out during the fall of 1976 and spring of 1977 to estimate current abundance and distribution of beaver within the Part boundaries. Attempts were made to determine whether or not tamarisk was being utilized by beaver or affecting their use of the area. A total of 105 beaver dens were located within the Park boundaries. Of these, 64 dens were active and 41 were Inactive . Habitat factors at active and inactive dens were evaluated to determine possible reasons for den abandonment.
