Mudflows and avalanches extending over at least 1,500 years presented a nearly ideal successional series. Nine species of conifer were present on these dacitic substrates. Spread of disseminules is apparently very important in determining composition in the first several hundred years. Conifers are capable of successful invasion of raw substrates, and the earliest conifer population is essentially determined by physical factors. More permanent and fully recorded study plots are needed in protected reserves.
