Primary productivity and related limiting factors were determined in three red salmon nursery lakes (Brooks, Naknek, and Becharof) in 1957. A carbon-14 technique was used to bioassy nutrients and as a direct measurement of primary productivity. Biweekly measurements of photosynthesis were made in Naknek Lake for comparison with more intensive sampling in Brooks Lake; a single measurement of photosynthesis in Lake Becharof was made as well. Estimates of productivity are presented in both a unit volume and surface area basis. All measurements were corrected for seasonal variation in visible light. Naknek Lake showed a markedly higher rate of photosynthesis per unit volume than either of the other lakes. Nitrate deficiency was evident in all lakes during July and August. Magnesium was found to limit phytoplankton production during summer.
