Proceedings, North American Public Bison Herds Symposium
Plumb GE. 1993. Proceedings, North American Public Bison Herds Symposium
The bison herd at Badlands National Park is regulated to maintain a highly visible vignette of the mixed prairie ecosystems. Surplus bison are distributed to Indian Tribes. In addition to providing for a popular visitor attraction, park goals include managing bison to influence the park grassland structure and function at an appropriate level. In order to accomplish such goals, a greater understanding of the functional role of bison/prairie dog/fire/native ungulate interactions is required.
