This 1974 U.S. Dept. of the Interior Final Environmental Impact Statement proposes that approximately 518,373 acres of lands and waters be legislatively established as the Cape Krusenstern National Monument in order to protect nationally significant cultural resources and their natural environment. The document proposes that the Monument be withdrawn from all forms of appropriation or entry under public land laws, including mining; that subsistence uses in the area be preserved; and that the Monument be studied for possible inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System. The report includes a proposed conceptual master plan to guide the area's management; descriptions of the existing environment; discussion of probable environmental impacts that would result from the proposed action; and alternatives to the proposed action, including no action, alternate management systems, and alternate boundaries.
