This is the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for a proposed Noatak National Arctic Range which would include approximately 7.59 million acres in the Noatak and Squirrel river basins. It would become a unit in the National Wildlife Refuge System and be managed jointly by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, with the U.S. National Park Service acting in an advisory capacity. This FEIS addresses environmental impacts associated with establishing the range and lays out the conceptual masterplan for its management. An "arctic range" is an ecological category of land classification and management. It is recognized as a large tract of federal land encompassing entire, or nearly entire, biotic units or ecosystems unaltered by the actions of man. It provides outstanding opportunities for preservation of ecosystems, long-term scientific research, and environmental education and recreation.
