Oil and gas was discovered on the Big Cypress National Preserve, FL in 1972 (Bear Island Field). The preserve's enabling legislation allowed for the continuation of certain land use activities, including the exploration for and extraction of oil, gas and other minerals. This report offers the oil and gas industry and holders of mineral rights an overview of the environmental issues associated with oil and gas development within the preserve. The report discusses sensitive resource areas within the preserve and identifies these on a map (about 3 x 6 feet).
