Report discusses the quantity of petroleum-like materials deposited on a particular beach at Padre Island National Seashore, Texas, and the source of this material. Because of high volume traffic by oil tankers in Corpus Christi Bay, and the natural seeps occurring on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico, the source is elusive. Assessment was made of the quantity of petroleum-like materials, collected in alternate months at two two-meter wide transects. The collected tars were analyzed using methods standard in the petroleum industry which characterize the chemical composition of crude petroleums: extraction, asphaltene precipitation, silica-gel chromatography, stable isotopic determination, and gas chromatographic analysis.
