The Arctic Network (ARCN) of the National Park Service's (NPR) Inventory and Monitoring Program (I&M) seeks to acquire and synthesize ecological field survey information and land cover maps for the five northwestern parks in Alaska that include the Bering Land Bridge Park and Preserve (BELA), Cape Krusenstern Preserve (CAKR), Noatak National Preserve (NOAT), Kobuk Valley National Park (KOVA) and the Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve (GAAR). This project is part of the I&M, which seeks to provide reliable and consistent scientific information to assess the status and trends in condition of National Park ecosystems. To provide a strong foundation for designing a long-term monitoring program, this project will integrate ground-derived databases and existing landcover maps across the parks with the goal of linking quantitative vegetation and soil characteristics as attributes of a unified land cover map. The project will be done in three phases over a three-year period. Phase 1 (2005?2006) will revise and unify the existing subsection maps, compile existing field data into a single Access database, and conduct field surveys in the Noatak park. Phase 2 (2006?2007) will conduct field surveys in the Kobuk park, updating the database, and compile landcover maps for the parks. Phase 3 (2006-2007) will conduct field surveys in the Gates of the Arctic park, analyze and synthesize vegetation and soil information across the parks, and integrate the classifications of the landcover maps for the five parks. This Scope of Work covers work during the second year, FY2006. Products generated by the ecological land survey and map integration can be expected to provide input to evaluating habitat changes, fire fuel modeling, as well as provide valuable baseline information about vegetation. It is recognized that the size and remote character of Alaska?s national parks requires that field sampling and mapping be done at coarser resolution than other non-Alaskan I&M vegetation mapping efforts. Effectiveness of this project will be enhanced by incorporating newly collected soil information and existing soil information as available.
