Located eighteen miles northwest of Boston in Concord, Massachusetts, the North Bridge Unit of Minute Man National Historical Park (NHP) is characterized primarily by historic farmland, the Concord River, and the North Bridge. The 114-acre site contains historic buildings and farmsteads, commemorative features, and formal estates. The current North Bridge, dating to 1956, stands at the site of the historic bridge and is the fourth commemorative bridge constructed since 1875. This Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) provides a comprehensive view of the landscape from 1635 to the present [2004 publication]. As a part of the Minute Man NHP, the North Bridge Unit is significant for its associations to events of April 19, 1775, when colonial militia and British Regulars first engaged in the conflict that marked the start of the American Revolution. The British had arrived in Concord to destroy colonial arms; an exchange of fire resulted in fatalities on both sides and prompted the eastward retreat of the British towards Lexington. The town began formal public remembrance of the battle anniversary fifty years later. The North Bridge Unit is significant as a commemorative landscape during the period 1825-1959, and five monuments and markers are located in the North Bridge Area. Notable examples include the 1836 Battle Monument and the Minute Man Statue. The post-battle era landscape it also significant in the area of landscape architecture, containing features of formal estate landscapes developed around 1879-1962. This includes mature trees of the Battle Lawn Estate (also known as Overlea), and the extensive gardens, drives, and mansion associated with the Buttrick estate. Finally, the landscape conveys agricultural significance for the period 1635-1949, its historic character still evident in open fields, houses, stone walls, tree-lined roads, and remnant orchards. Concord was settled by English Puritans in 1635, and the area was dominated by cultivated fields, meadows, and pastures prior to the Revolution. Aside from the commemorative areas and several fields that had reverted to forest, most of the land retained its agricultural character into the mid-twentieth century. Three houses dating to the time of the 1775 battle remain on the site, and historic road traces, stone walls, and building ruins also contribute to the historic agricultural character of the landscape. The North Bridge Unit has been managed by the National Park Service (NPS) since the Minute Man NHP was established in 1959. The landscape continues to retain integrity in areas of military, commemorative, and agricultural significance. The CLR is intended to be used for the treatment and long-term management of the cultural landscapes at the North Bridge Unit. It provides site managers with a comprehensive site history, identifies important landscape characteristics and features, compares and analyzes the historic and existing conditions, and provides treatment recommendations to guide future site development.
