This project workplan addresses monitoring needs for the Northeast Temperate Inventory and Monitoring Network including 11 parks (including the Appalachian National Scenic Trail) in the northeastern United States. Our goal is to develop a monitoring program that measures the ecological condition or integrity of communities and ecosystems in the northeast temperate network vital signs monitoring program of the National Park Service. We develop a sequence of steps, including: a) classification and mapping of community and ecosystem types, b) development of criteria for measuring ecological integrity using key factors and indicators (vital signs), c) piloting the approach in a specific park showing how to rank the integrity of specific occurrences of communities and ecological systems, and d) providing methodological guidelines for the development of indicators and their sampling needs (Figure 2). Our deliverables would provide a detailed conceptual framework as to how a monitoring program can be established in the network of parks, with a pilot demonstration from at least one park.
