The primary goal of the Environmental Contaminants monitoring program is to create a long-term surveillance record for airborne, freshwater, and marine contaminants. This program tracks whether priority pollutants cross defined concentration thresholds that may pose a threat to the generally pristine condition of NPS resources in Southeast Alaska. The SEAN recognizes that in some cases there may not be widely accepted thresholds for certain analytes, or some may change over time as new toxicological research emerges. Due to the observed low magnitude and relatively high variability of some contaminant concentrations in previous studies conducted within SEAN parks, trend detection may not be possible for decades and is not a feasible goal given budget constraints coupled with the expense of laboratory analyses. When practical, contaminant concentrations will be compared against state, federal, or other relevant criteria for human and ecological health.
