Objective of study is to inventory and quantify the major sources of nutrients to the system and to document the ecological status of the Bass Harbor Marsh estuary. Over the past several years anecdotal reports have indicated that macroalgal biomass (Cladophora and others) has significantly increased in the marsh. Others have suggested habitat qUality degradation, especially with respect to declines in the brook trout recreational fishery." It is hypothesized that nutrient enrichment may be an important factor contributing to these observed ecological changes. Perhaps nutrient loading (particularly ammonia) from a landfill adjacent to Marshall Brook, a tributary to the Bass Harbor Marsh, may be contributing to excess nutrient loading. At the estuarine end of the system, the shoreline of the harbor is subject to nutrient loading from septic systems and other discharges of human waste (locally termed "overboard discharges").
