Site History, Existing Conditions, and Analysis. Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park and the AKRO Cultural Landscapes Program are pleased to present the second printing of the The Chilkoot Trail Cultural Landscape Report, Part I. Cultural Landscape Reports are a primary management document for the identification and treatment of cultural landscapes in the National Parks system. Typically the effort is completed in two parts. The first explores the historical and existing conditions of the landscape, and offers an analysis of the property's historic significance and integrity, based on a comparison of past and present conditions. The second, building upon the findings of Part I, develops and articulates treatment recommendations guided by the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. The volume presented here is the first part of this effort, and includes a site history, an inventory of character defining features, and an analysis & evaluation of its historic significance and integrity. The landscape history documents major events from the pre-Gold Rush era to the present. The Existing Conditions chapter is an extensive inventory and mapping effort of character defining features along the trail corridor. The Analysis & Evaluation chapter examines the National Register significance of the landscape and offers a direction for treatment of this landscape, which is also a National Historic Landmark. It also recommends an expansion of the National Register rational to encompass other significant historical eras beyond its Gold Rush significance. This second printing was produced by the Alaska Cultural Landscapes Program staff in collaboration with the dedicated professionals of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. It corrects a number of typos and fixes a few factual over-sites. In addition it was printed on sturdier paper and given a mylar cover for longevity and ruggedness as a field reference.
