Through this cooperative project between the National Park Service, University of New Mexico and Morrow Reardon Wilkinson Miller, Ltd., Landscape Architects, research, documentation and analysis, and development of treatment recommendations will be completed to produce Parts One and Two of a Cultural Landscape Report for the Old Santa Fe Trail Building NHL in Santa Fe, New Mexico. According to A Guide to Cultural Landscape Reports: Contents, Process, and Techniques, “A Cultural Landscape Report serves two important functions: it is the principal treatment document for cultural landscapes and it is the primary tool for long-term management of those landscapes. A CLR guides management and treatment decisions about a landscape’s physical attributes, biotic systems, and use when that use contributes to historical signifi cance.” (Dolan, Gilbert and Page, A Guide to Cultural Landscape Reports, 1998, page 3) The methodology and format for undertaking this CLR has been determined using the 1998 A Guide to Cultural Landscape Reports and the 1996 Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties with Guidelines for the Treatment of Cultural Landscapes. Th ese documents, together with the 2001 General Management Plan, served as the basis for establishing the primary treatment approach, and guided recommendations made regarding which approach was most appropriate for specific features. Research, documentation and analysis performed in compiling Cultural Landscape Inventories of 2005 and 2001 are used as a foundation of Part I of this CLR. Th e 2005 CLI, for instance, includes a detailed analysis and evaluation of the historic integrity of the OSFTB cultural landscape, which the CLI concludes remains intact; whereas the 2001 CLI provides a comprehensive history of the site and region. Additional site investigation, examination of primary and secondary documentation and historical records, historic photographs, architectural drawings, maps, and administrative records, as well as fi rst person interviews, build upon the work done previously and contribute in determining appropriate treatment recommendations. Overall, this CLR uses a comprehensive but not exhaustive level of investigation.
