This cultural landscape report documents the landscape history and evaluates the significant features of the historic landscape in order to provide treatment recommendations for the Meriwether Lewis Monument (the Park), Natchez Trace Parkway (NATR), located in Lewis County, Tennessee. The Park was established in 1925 as a memorial to Meriwether Lewis, who died at Grinder’s Inn just off the old Natchez Trace in 1809. The overall goal of the historical research is to document significant changes to the landscape over time. The research findings are used to draw comparisons to the site’s conditions in order to assess what resources remain from the Grinder’s Inn site and from later commemorative overlays. Based on this analysis, recommendations are proposed to suggest how the landscape resources can most effectively be treated and interpreted. Two earlier studies, Meriwether Lewis Monument and Site: A Compilation of Critical Dates and Developments (1999) and an Administrative History (1967), served as essential starting points for understanding the changes that have occurred at the Meriwether Lewis site. A number of secondary sources provided additional background information on regional geography, culture, and local history. Other park documents reviewed include the 1987 General Management Plan, historical maps and drawings, archival photographs, and various early park documents, including “Superintendent’s Reports” for Meriwether Lewis National Monument. Field research included site visits during March and August 2000. Historical investigation was limited primarily to the review of pre-existing park research and documentation, visits to the state archives and the Lewis County library, and conversations with persons having specific site history information.
