This Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) is a primary product of a broad-based evaluative examination of the cultural landscape qualities of the Going-to-the-Sun Road. The overall study, conducted during the years 2000, 2001 and 2002 by Renewable Technologies, Incorporated (RTI) under contract to the National Park Service, includes both this CLR and an accompanying Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI). The CLI, completed in March 2001, contains a comprehensive, map-based inventory of all ancillary structural and engineering features along the Sun Road, with information about the design, condition, and historic significance of each feature. The data contained in the CLI serves as a basis for the broader contextual information contained in the CLR. The development of both the CLI and CLR was undertaken, in part, to provide background material to assist in the planning for a major reconstruction of the upper reaches of the Sun Road. A variety of other studies – including engineering, socioeconomic, and visitor use analyses – are also being prepared to support the reconstruction planning process. The NPS contracted the development of the latter documents to the Washington Infrastructure Group, and RTI’s Glacier work is being performed as a subcontractor to Washington. Mark Hufstetler, a professional historian on RTI’s staff, served as the project manager for the Sun Road contract and was the principal author of this document. Substantial portions of the text were prepared by Kathryn McKay and Janet Cornish, working as subcontractors to RTI. A draft outline of this document was submitted to the NPS for its approval in December 2000. Research and fieldwork were conducted during the autumn of 2000 and the spring of 2001 by all three co-authors, and the text itself was written during the summer of 2001. A draft product was submitted for NPS review that August, and the final report was prepared during the winter of 2001-2002.
