The Lincoln Home National Historic Site is located in the state capital of Springfield, Illinois. Falling within Sangamon County, it is a part of the 20th Congressional District of Illinois. The Lincoln Home National Historic Site consists of a four block area centered around the home of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln. It is bounded by Capitol Avenue on the north, Edwards Street to the south, Ninth Street to the east and Seventh Street to the west. The Lincoln Home National Historic Site Cultural Landscape Report was initiated in June of 1993. The overall project intent is to determine the historic appearance of the properties and public rights-of-way within the historic site and to recommend appropriate preservation treatment for the landscape of the historic zone for the area as a whole and each property individually; to provide for visitor use of both the historic and development zone in a manner that has the least negative impact on historic resources and is compatible with the materials, scale and character of the historic properties; and to develop a comprehensive development zone landscape plan that will more effectively screen the interior of LHNHS from visually and acoustically intrusive elements external to the site.
