This Cultural Landscape Report was prepared to provide guidance for park management regarding the protection and management of the site's landscape. The document draws on information from Volume 1 of the Cultural Landscape Report (1995), which documents the historical development of the site, assesses National Register eligibility, identifies character-defining features, and provides an assessment of the site's historic integrity. Lindenwald was established as the Martin Van Buren site in 1974 to commemorate the life and political career of the eighth President of the United States (1837-1841). During the years that Martin Van Buren owned the property, he experimented with plants and managed the farm. The site is now open to the public as a house museum. The grounds are maintained to their 1974 appearance, when the National Park Service took over management of the site. In addition to the house, the landscape includes a semi-circular entry drive, a gate house, two building foundations, and numerous specimen trees. The 24.9 acres of historic land represent the core of the original farm, which was once 221 acres.
