This Cultural Landscape Report provides an inventory and evaluation of the historic landscape at Big Meadow, in the Foresta area of Yosemite National Park. This report analyzes the development and evolution of the Big Meadow, from prehistoric Native American occupation to present use under National Park Service ownership. In conducting the research for this cultural landscape report, both primary and secondary sources were utilized including letters, interviews, and books about Foresta and the Big Meadow site. In addition to archival and library research, an inventory and analysis of existing landscape features such as vegetation, slope, soil type, and irrigation infrastructure, was made on site. Based on the information obtained through the evaluation of the historic landscape resources at Big Meadow, this report includes recommendations for the preservation, rehabilitation, maintenance and interpretation of the resources at Big Meadow.
