Zane Grey Family Property: Preliminary Cultural Landscape Assessment, Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, National Park Service

1990. Zane Grey Family Property: Preliminary Cultural Landscape Assessment, Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, National Park Service. Cultural Landscape Report. NPS Northeast Regional Office. Northeast Regional Office

This project involves a basic assessment of the cultural landscape of the former Grey Family Property. The project is a supplementary study to the Historic Structures Report developed by the architects. This preliminary cultural landscape assessment is intended to focus on the Zane Grey residency period (principally 1904-1918), assess the current conditions against those of this period of significance, and develop conceptual recommendations for further research, planning and improved interpretation and management of this cultural landscape. The project is of limited scope and budget. Secondary sources were utilized. Additional primary source research was not a component of the work. These recommendations are intended to address the property now owned by the National Park Service (NPS) and the larger area formerly owned by Zane and Dolly Grey. On October 19, 1990, Patricia M. O’Donnell and Charles A. Birnbaum, historic landscape architects, conducted a field reconnaissance of the property and took a series of existing conditions photographs. Text materials secured from the site and the project architects, including draft and final copies of the Historic Structures Report for the Zane Grey House, the Historic American Building Survey (HABS) Zane Grey House Report and the preliminary report of Hunter Research, archaeology consultants, were thoroughly reviewed. Historic photographs and postcard views, from the NPS Zane Grey Site Office, were the graphic references for the historic appearance and uses of the property. The field reconnaissance and the review of sources provides the basis for this report. This project is limited in scope and preliminary in nature. Further research and planning is recommended to refine, and as necessary, correct, any concepts set forth herein and to undertake implementation of these recommendations.
