This Historic Structure Report (HSR) contains a comprehensive history of the Bodie Island Life-Saving Station & Boat House at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The report for the 1879 Station with boat house was prepared in anticipation of an impending move to a location more distant to the coastline. Because of the increasing scarcity of the 1876 Type stations and because numerous physical modifications make difficult an understanding of appearance during its period of greatest historic significance, restoration is the recommended treatment. The recommended exterior and interior treatments are restoration to the 1885 period, a time when it still retained original features distinct to the station type. Part I of the HSR includes developmental history of the structure, with a timeline from 1850 to 2004, and a physical description. Part II describes the proposed treatment recommendations.
