This Historic Structure Report (HSR) contains a comprehensive history of the Bodie Island Coast Guard Station of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Over time, changes have been made to the structure, and the encroachment of the ocean has threatened the buildings and site. The report for the 1925 station was prepared in anticipation of an impending move to a location more distant to the coastline. Because of the increasing scarcity of the Chatham Type stations and because numerous physical modifications make difficult an understanding of appearance during its period of greatest historic significance, restoration is the recommended treatment. The recommended treatment is restoration to 1925, a period when the building was most representative of the last station designed by the Life-Saving Service. the recommended treatment for the interior is rehabilitation. Part I of the HSR includes developmental history of the structure, with a timeline from 1850 to 2004, and a physical description. Part II describes the proposed treatment recommendations.
