This project contains documents related to the design and implementation of the Northeast Temperate Network's long-term rocky intertidal monitoring program. The NETN rocky intertidal monitoring effort collects data for key metrics representing the ecological health of the intertidal zone, and over time will provide an indication of the trend of these metrics. The monitoring is not intended to be a comprehensive assessment of the ecosystem or the factors contributing to changes in condition; rather it is intended to provide an early warning when problematic changes are occurring. The rocky intertidal zone is a unique habitat that is used by a variety of species, many of them at the edge of their physical and ecological tolerances, and thus likely to be impacted by climate change. Monitoring three areas (Acadia National Park, Boston Harbor National Recreation Area, and USFWS Metinic Coastal Islands) will allow NETN to determine whether future changes occur across broader scales (hundreds of kilometers versus a few to tens of kilometers) and a gradient of human visitation and management practices. This regional approach to monitoring can contribute to management decision-making for coastal resources.
