A history of lightships in the US to include an inventory of surviving lightships in the US as of 1989. Lightships in the U.S., was written as a separate historic context as part of the unfinished Maritime Heritage of the United States National Historic Landmark Theme Study. It was intended to accompany Part One: Large Preserved Historic Vessels. The Maritime Heritage of the United States theme study was intended to assemble National Historic Landmark nominations and historic contexts under eleven categories to include lightships. The eleven categories were: Large Preserved Historic Vessels Lighthouses and Light Stations Life-Saving Stations Shipwrecks and Hulks World War II Sites Other Naval Battle Sites Naval Facilities, Bases, and Shipyards Maritime Exploration Canals and Waterways People, Labor, and Philanthropy Other Maritime Districts, Buildings, and Structures Of these, only the Large Preserved Historic Vessels, Lighthouses and Light Stations, and World War II Sites sections were completed.
