Moccasin Bend National Archeological District (Moccasin Bend) is a cultural landscape sub-unit of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Moccasin Bend has been occupied by a variety of American Indian groups, it was traversed by the Cherokee Tribe on the Trail of Tears, and it was home to Union soldiers protecting Chattanooga during the Civil War. Moccasin Bend is important for its collection of American Indian sites, primarily associated with the Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian cultures. The site also contains a historic road trace used during the Cherokee removal, as well as various Civil War earthworks. Many 20th-century alterations and developments characterize the present-day landscape at Moccasin Bend, most of which were built or constructed before late 20th-century archeological findings revealed the property’s historic significance. The cultural landscape report (CLR) is divided into two parts. Part I of the CLR includes research, development of a site history, inventory and assessment of existing conditions, analysis and evaluation of landscape significance based on National Register criteria, and an assessment of landscape integrity. Part II of the CLR provides treatment recommendations for long-term management reflective of the landscape’s significance, condition, and planned use.
