Rocky Knob Recreation Area is a 4,000-acre cultural landscape located about 40 miles southwest of Roanoke, and about 17 miles north of the Virginia/North Carolina border in the southwestern portion of Virginia. Rocky Knob is one of several recreation and service areas along the Blue Ridge Parkway, which runs 469 miles from Shenandoah National Park in Central Virginia to Great Smokey Mountains National Park near Cherokee, North Carolina. Five component landscapes are found within the recreation area: Rocky Knob Campground, Rocky Knob Maintenance Area, Rocky Knob Picnic Area, Rocky Knob Gas Station, and the Rocky Knob Trail Lodge Cabins. Other cultural resources within the Rocky Knob Recreation Area include Section 1-S of the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Saddle Overlook, Rock Castle George Overlook, Twelve O’clock Overlook, Trail Shelter, Pump House, and the Rock Castle Gorge Community. Increased visitor use, age, environmental stresses, and other factors are serious threats to the continued preservation of the Blue Ridge Parkway’s significant cultural resources. This cultural landscape report (CLR) will identify and prioritize actions needed to ensure the resource preservation while balancing the goals of historic preservation with contemporary use and management concern. The CLR for Rocky Knob Recreation Area describes the historical development of the site; documents the existing conditions; provides analysis of the landscape’s potential National Register significance; identifies the site’s character-defining features; determines appropriate treatment recommendations that facilitate preservation of the site’s resources, that address management concerns, and that inform the imminent development of Rocky Knob Recreation Area.
