The Cravens House cultural landscape is located within the Lookout Mountain Battlefield sub-unit of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park (CHCH) in Hamilton County, Tennessee. CHCH National Military Park totals 9,036 acres in both Georgia and Tennessee; the Lookout Mountain Battlefield landscape totals 3,000 acres. The Cravens House landscape is a component landscape of the Lookout Mountain Battlefield, and includes the main house and a kitchen/dairy outbuilding, which are the oldest surviving buildings on the mountain. The Cravens House was constructed by Robert Cravens, a Chattanooga industrialist, in 1855. It was the site of the “Battle Above the Clouds” during the American Civil War. This cultural landscape report (CLR) establishes preservation goals for Cravens House and establishes treatment strategies that can be incorporated into CHCH’s new General Management Plan Amendment for Lookout Mountain Battlefield. The CLR for Cravens House describes the site’s overall historical development; documents the existing landscape conditions; provides analysis of the landscape’s National Register significance; provides analysis of the landscape’s integrity by comparing the existing conditions to the condition during the period of significance; identifies the character-defining features of the historic landscape; identifies the preferred treatment, as well as appropriate alternative treatments; provides implementation strategies for landscape restoration; and provides draft project statements and cost estimates to be entered in the Project Management Information System (PMIS) by park staff.
