Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park (KEMO) is a 2,987-acre park located in Cobb County, Georgia, approximately twenty-five miles northwest of Atlanta. The park is characterized by the rolling hills and rock outcrops of the Georgia Piedmont. The most distinctive landform is the isolated ridge that includes Kennesaw Mountain and Little Kennesaw Mountain. Kennesaw Mountain afforded sweeping views of the area for Confederate troops during the American Civil War. The park is associated with the Battles of Kennesaw Mountain and Kolb Farm, and through the park’s sixteen miles of self-guided trails provide access to key battlefield engagement locations, examples of Union and Confederate earthworks, and places of prospect where military tactics and troop movements can be understood. However, a dramatic increase in development within the region surrounding KEMO, and associated visitation that includes extensive recreational use, has contributed to a general deterioration of the park’s historic resources. This poses a serious threat to the historic integrity and continued preservation of the park’s historic landscape. This cultural landscape report (CLR) is intended to support inventory and evaluation of the park resources, improvements to the condition of these features, and implementation of the park strategic planning efforts. The primary goals for this CLR are to provide the park with an assessment of the battlefield landscape, including documentation of character-defining features and extant historic resources; and to devise specific treatment recommendations and strategies to ensure the preservation of significant cultural landscape resources. Furthermore, as the Civil War earthworks are one the most important extant landscape features, the CLR includes a complementary earthworks management plan.
