Hitchcock S. 2013. The John Gordon House: Cultural Landscape Report, Natchez Trace Parkway, National Park Service. Cultural Landscape Report. 604/122117. NPS Southeast Regional Office. Southeast Regional Office, National Park Service
The John Gordon House is a 42.5-acre property located along the Natchez Trace Parkway in Middle Tennessee, approximately 42 miles southwest of Nashville. The house itself is a two-story brick I-house that was built in 1818. While I-houses were very common during this time, with brick being a uncommon building material in frontier Tennessee. The John Gordon House was a variant of the hall-and-parlor plan, but differed from traditional styles by having two entrances. While the house is one of the primary landscape features of the property, the site also contains several outbuildings, a church cemetery, part of the Natchez Trace, the Gordon Ferry site, and various small-scale features. The John Gordon House was listed in the National Register on April 18, 1974, and the property is significant under Criterion B and Criterion C. This cultural landscape report (CLR) documents the physical development of the John Gordon property, beginning with the establishment of the John Gordon Ferry in 1802 and continuing to the present. A site history is followed by a description of the current condition of the property and an analysis of historical significance and integrity. This includes an evaluation of the historic and contemporary landscape characteristics, such as changes in spatial organization, circulation, and vegetation. With an understanding of the historic fabric, character-defining features of the cultural landscape are identified. The report then presents treatment issues and recommendations to direct the active management of the cultural landscape.
