Harry S. Truman National Historic Site - Independence Unit: Cultural Landscape Report, Harry S. Truman National Historic Site, National Park Service

Quinn Evans Architects, Contractor and Mundus Bishop Design, Contractor. 2015. Harry S. Truman National Historic Site - Independence Unit: Cultural Landscape Report, Harry S. Truman National Historic Site, National Park Service. Cultural Landscape Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Midwest Regional Office. Midwest Regional Office

The Cultural Landscape Report (CLR) updates the former CLR of the Truman Home property, bringing it up to current NPS standards and adding the Noland, Frank Wallace, and George Wallace homes to the cultural landscape. The project area includes the Independence Unit of the Harry S Truman National Historic Site (NHS), incorporating information from the previous CLR. The documentation and evaluation of a CLR serve as a framework upon which treatment recommendations can be developed, providing a full history and continuing guidance for landscape management. The Harry S Truman NHS, located in Independence, Missouri preserves the former home of Harry S Truman, thirty-third president of the United States. The resources of the cultural landscape help interpret the life experience of Truman, his roles as President and as citizen, and his influence on history. The study area is set within a residential neighborhood. Although the significance of the landscape draws from Truman’s tenure as President between 1945 and 1953, the properties within the NHS represent associations with Truman and his family from 1867 through 1862. His widow, Bess Truman, continued to occupy the home after her husband’s death in 1972. The report includes a site history, existing conditions and analysis, treatment recommendations, implementation tasks for each part of the landscape, and preservation maintenance guidance.
