This report in an update for the ongoing long-term snowshoe hare ecology monitoring study in eastern GAAR and neighboring areas, covering the period since its inception in 1997 through 2011. The study seeks to determine whether there are differences in hare populations in areas where hares practice geophagy during peak population phases and neighboring areas where hares do not engage in geophagy. We report results from hare population monitoring through track and pellet counts, browse measurements, tannin & nutrient levels in browse, heavy metals in soils & browse, and mineral salts in soils.
