The long-term monitoring of snowshoe hares in eastern Gates of the Arctic National Park and Middle Fork Koyukuk River valley near Wiseman, Alaska. The snowshoe hare ecology project began in 1997 with annual snowshoe hare track counts in eastern Gates of the Arctic National Park. Evidence of hare geophagy over the next few years led to the expansion of the study area to include monitoring hare populations at "mineral" and "non-mineral" sites. Pellet plot grids were established at 4 mineral and 3 non-mineral sites to monitor hare population trends. Trail cameras were set up at mineral licks to document hare geophagy. This project, in collaboration with the University of Alaska Fairbanks, has also resulted in joint ecological studies of hares, lynx, and great-horned owls.
